Galileo Galilei Talk 2025

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, successfully organized the Galileo Galilei Talk 2025 on 25th February 2025, focusing on the growing role of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in astronomy. The keynote speaker, Mr. Mousam Mondal from the University of Hertfordshire, delivered an engaging talk on how AI and ML are revolutionizing astronomical data analysis, exoplanet detection, and cosmic simulations. His insights sparked curiosity among students, leading to an interactive Q&A session. The event began with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Biplab Halder, Vice Chancellor, and concluded with a vote of thanks, appreciating the speaker and organizers. Two-day Night Sky Observation Camp

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, hosted a webinar on “Vision into Vision of Animals” on November 5, 2024, at 2:00 PM. The session featured Mr. Sundar M. N. from the Department of Physics, Jain University, Bangalore, as the guest speaker. The event commenced with a welcome address at 2:00 PM, followed by an introduction of the speaker at 2:05 PM. Mr. Sundar M. N. delivered an engaging talk from 2:10 PM to 2:40 PM, where he explored the fascinating world of animal vision, addressing everyday questions about how different species perceive their surroundings. His presentation provided scientific insights into the unique visual capabilities of various animals, highlighting differences in color perception, night vision, and motion detection compared to human vision. Following the talk, an interactive discussion session at 2:40 PM allowed participants to ask questions and engage in thought-provoking conversations on the subject. Indian Knowledge System (IKS)Talk on Smart Materials and its Applications

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, organized an Indian Knowledge System (IKS) Talk on “Smart Materials and Their Applications” on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, via an online platform. The session featured Dr. Rajkumar Modak, Project Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, The University of Tokyo, Japan, as the distinguished speaker. Dr. Modak, an expert in materials science, has made significant contributions as a Special Researcher and JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute for Materials Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from IIT Guwahati and specializes in magnetocaloric and spintronic studies. The talk, scheduled at 2 PM, explored the properties and advancements of smart materials and their diverse real-world applications. The event drew an engaged audience of over 30 participants, who actively interacted and gained valuable insights into this cutting-edge field. By highlighting innovative developments in material science, the session successfully fostered awareness and enthusiasm among attendees, encouraging further exploration of smart technologies and their potential impact.

Indian Knowledge System (IKS)Talk on Observational Astronomy and Indian Calendar

The session aimed to explore the rich astronomical heritage of India and its scientific contributions to timekeeping.Dr. Sovan Ghosh, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Physics, was the speaker for the event. Through a well-illustrated presentation, he provided an in-depth analysis of Indian astronomy, explaining how ancient scholars meticulously observed celestial bodies to develop a sophisticated timekeeping system. He highlighted the scientific foundations of the Indian calendar system, detailing the methods used to track planetary movements, lunar cycles, and solar transitions.The talk captivated the audience, offering historical insights and scientific explanations of time measurement in ancient India. The session concluded with a lively Q&A discussion, as the enthusiastic audience engaged in thought-provoking queries, eager to deepen their understanding of the subject.Overall, the event successfully showcased India’s contributions to observational astronomy, sparking curiosity and appreciation for the scientific legacy embedded in the Indian Knowledge System.

National Space Day 2024

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, celebrated National Space Day on September 13, 2024, with a series of competitions and interactive activities designed to inspire enthusiasm for space science among students. The event served as a dynamic platform for students to showcase their creativity in scientific applications and engage in thought-provoking discussions on space exploration. Participants included students from both the university and local schools, fostering a spirit of collaboration and learning across different academic levels. Various competitions, such as quiz contests, model-making, and essay writing, allowed students to express their knowledge and passion for astronomy, astrophysics, and space technology. Faculty members and experts guided discussions on recent advancements in space research, encouraging students to think critically about the future of space exploration. A Hands-on Session on Yoga

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, organized a hands-on yoga session for B.Sc. Physics students on September 12, 2023, at Rupen Bhowmik Yoga Hall. The session, attended by 26 students and faculty members, began with an inaugural address by Dr. Sovan Ghosh, Head of the Department, followed by an introductory lecture on yoga. Prof. Prasenjit Majumder from the Department of Physical Education and Yoga led the session, highlighting the benefits of yoga in daily life. He demonstrated various yoga postures, progressively increasing their complexity while explaining their effects. Students actively participated, performing the postures with enthusiasm. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Gobinda Pradhan, making it an engaging and informative experience for all.

A Quality Improvement Program on Statistical Methods in Physics

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, organized a Quality Improvement Program on Statistical Methods in Physics from July 15 to July 19, 2024, to commemorate the centenary of Bose statistics. The program began with a welcome address by Dr. Sovan Ghosh, Head of the Department, followed by an inaugural speech by Prof. (Dr.) Biplab Halder, Vice Chancellor of The ICFAI University, Tripura. The first two days featured four pedagogical lectures by Dr. Tuhin Subhra Mukherjee, who provided an introduction to probability theory in physics and conducted two problem-solving sessions. On the third day, Dr. Sourav Chattopadhyay delivered engaging talks on stochastic experiments on computers, demonstrating simulations of stochastic processes, and introduced Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). On the fourth day, Dr. Sourav Chattopadhyay continued his discussion on BEC, followed by a lecture from Prof. V. Balakrishnan, Professor Emeritus (Retd.), IIT Madras, on “Comparing Probability Distributions in the Quantum State of Light.” The final day featured two insightful talks: Prof. Satadal Bhattacharyya from Scottish Church College provided an introduction to BEC, while Prof. Saurabh Basu from IIT Guwahati discussed the theoretical and experimental perspectives of BEC. Throughout the five-day event, stimulating discussions between speakers and participants enriched the learning experience, making the program a resounding success.

World Quantum Day 2024

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, in collaboration with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers RC-18, celebrated World Quantum Day for the second time on April 10th and 12th, 2024. The event commenced with a smokeless lamp-lighting ceremony to promote sustainability, followed by the unveiling of the latest issue of Reflections, the department’s newsletter. Prof. (Dr.) A. Ranganath highlighted the significance of Quantum Science, while Prof. (Dr.) Priyangshu Rana Borthakur introduced India’s Quantum Mission and ICFAI’s contributions. The program featured an opening online talk by Prof. Usha Devi A. R. on Quantum Computation, a public quiz conducted by Dr. Arunabha Saha, and oral and poster presentations by M.Sc. students. The eight oral and 25 poster presentations received high praise. On April 12th, Dr. Antariksha Das from ICFO, Spain, delivered an insightful talk on entanglement distribution, while Dr. Satadal Bhattacharyya from Scottish Church College discussed the Correspondence Principle, marking its centenary. The event concluded with awards for winners of the oral and poster presentations, as well as academic toppers. Dr. Swapan Majumder commended the successful organization. Led by convener Dr. Sovan Ghosh, the program fostered curiosity and innovation in quantum science.

Online workshop on Fundamentals of Vacuum Science & Technology

The One-Day Online Workshop on the Fundamentals of Vacuum Science and Technology, organized by the Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, in collaboration with Vacuum Techniques Pvt Ltd, was held on April 5, 2024. With 149 participants, the workshop provided a comprehensive understanding of vacuum science and its applications. The event began with an introduction by Dr. Sovan Ghosh, followed by session moderation by Dr. Camelia Das. The first session featured Ms. Swapna Y and Dr. Sitaram Dash from Vacuum Techniques Pvt Ltd, who shared valuable insights into vacuum science and technology. An interactive Q&A session allowed participants to deepen their understanding. In the second session, Dr. Sitaram Dash continued the discussion, engaging attendees in further exploration of the topic. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Bibhabasu De, acknowledging the contributions of speakers and organizers. Overall, the workshop served as a vital platform for learning, collaboration, and networking, highlighting the academic and industrial significance of vacuum science and technology.

Einstein Hawking Lecture 2024

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, organized the Einstein-Hawking Lecture on March 14, 2024, at 4:00 PM, to honor the groundbreaking contributions of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking to physics. The event featured Dr. Debaprasad Maity, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, IIT Guwahati, as the resource person. He delivered an insightful lecture on "Gravitational Waves: Theory and Observations." Participants joined the webinar via the provided link, with over 40 attendees taking part. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, offering participants the opportunity to engage with the speaker and deepen their understanding of the topic.

National Science Day Celebration 2024

The ICFAI University Tripura, in collaboration with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (RC-18), celebrated National Science Day on February 28, 2024, under the theme “Indigenous Technology for Viksit Bharat.” The event featured an inaugural session with distinguished guests, including Prof. Pramode Ranjan Bhattacharjee, Mr. Ranjit Kumar Debnath, and Prof. Anirban Guha, along with an inspiring speech by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Biplab Halder on the significance of scientific inquiry and technological advancement. Guest lectures covered diverse topics such as ambiguity in physics norms (Prof. Bhattacharjee), cosmology (Dr. Sovan Ghosh), and earthquake-resistant metamaterials (Dr. Palas Mandal). Various competitions, including Sit & Draw, Science Model, Poster Presentation, Quiz, Best Out of Waste, and PPT Presentation, saw enthusiastic participation. Winners included Umakanta Academy English, Bhavan’s Tripura B.Ed. College, Tripura University, JNV Mohanpur, and The ICFAI University Tripura. The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, reinforcing the importance of scientific curiosity and innovation in shaping a progressive and self-reliant India.

Galileo Galilei Talk 2024

The Department of Physics at The ICFAI University, Tripura, successfully organized the Galileo Galilei Talk on 20th February 2024 to promote scientific curiosity and academic discussions. The event featured Dr. Sanchita Roy, an Assistant Professor from Royal Global University, Guwahati, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Roy, known for her expertise in light scattering applications, delivered a talk on “Light Scattering Tool for Investigation of Microbial Property of Black Garlic”, exploring its theoretical foundations and practical implications. The session began with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Biplab Halder, Vice Chancellor, followed by an introduction of Dr. Roy by Dr. Sovan Ghosh, Head of the Department. Dr. Roy’s presentation engaged both UG and PG students, who actively participated in discussions and Question and Answer session . The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Tuhin Subhra Mukherjee, appreciating Dr. Roy and the organizing committee. The Galileo Galilei Talk 2024 was an intellectually enriching experience, fostering research interest and interdisciplinary learning in physics.

Dark Matter Day 2023

The Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, successfully hosted a webinar titled “In Search of Dark Matter” on October 31, 2023, in celebration of Dark Matter Day. The session was conducted at 3:00 PM IST via Google Meet and saw enthusiastic participation from students, researchers, and physics enthusiasts. The webinar featured Dr. Subhadeep Bhattacharya, Associate Professor at the Department of Physics, IIT Guwahati, as the Resource Person. He provided valuable insights into the nature of dark matter, discussing its theoretical foundations, observational evidence, and the latest research advancements. The session was presided over by Prof. Dr. Biplab Halder, Vice-Chancellor of ICFAI University, Tripura, who facilitated discussions and ensured an engaging academic exchange. This webinar served as a valuable platform for participants to explore the mysteries of dark matter, contributing to their understanding of one of the most fascinating and unresolved topics in modern cosmology.

Plasma Exhibition 2023

The Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, organized a Plasma exhibition in association with the Institute for Plasma Research and Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). The main attractions were the live plasma exhibition, workshop, popular talk, Quiz, and Gaming. There were be participants from the whole North-Eastern parts of India.

Self defence session 2023

The Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, organized a self defence session. The session was conducted under the guidance of Prof. Tapasjit Rajkumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education and Yoga, The ICFAI University Tripura. The students of the Department of Physics actively participated in the event. The students performed various simple self defence postures, as demonstrated by Prof. Tapasjit. Dr. Sovan Ghosh, HOD, Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, and Prof. Bibhabasu De, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, actively motivated the students to participate the session.

Tree plantation drive

The Department of Physics organized a tree plantation drive at The ICFAI University Tripura on April 12, 2023 near Kamalghat Market. A few useful plants were arranged for the purpose and planted by the students and Faculties of the department. The aim was to help students get in touch with nature and raise awareness about the importance of trees in maintaining a healthy environment.

Women's Day Special Talk

The Department of Physics organized a Webinar on TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE WITH SCIENCE to celebrate International Women's Day and grow Science interest among girl students. The speaker is Dr. Papiya Roy, Climate Change Coordinator, City of Mississauga, Govt. of Canada.

Inauguration of Physics Webpage

Sri P K Chakraborty, IAS, Secretary to Chief Minister, Tripura, inaugurated the webpage of the Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, on National Science Day 2023 on February 28, 2023. The Registrar, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Head of the Department of Physics, Faculty, and Staff members were present at the ceremony.

National Science Day 2023 celebration at The ICFAI University Tripura

ICFAI Science School of The ICFAI University Tripura observed National Science Day 2023 on February 28, 2023. The theme of this year is "GLOBAL SCIENCE FOR GLOBAL WELLBEING. The aim was to grow students' interest and make our society dependent on scientific development.

There was be Sit and Draw competition, Quiz competition, Poster competition, Science Model building competition, Presentation competition, and Best out of waste competition. Students from different schools and colleges across Tripura participate in these events.

Orientation Program for the Value-added courses of the Department of Physics

Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura is offering four value added courses at present: Recent Development in Theoretical Physics by Prof. Bibhabasu De, Physics in Daily Life by Dr. Sovan Ghosh, Data Visualization using Python by Dr. Sourav Chattopadhyay and Innovation and Scientific Model Building by Dr. Sovan Ghosh and Dr. Gobinda Pradhan. The value added courses are commenced on 24 February 2023. All the courses will be minimum of 30 hours duration. The participants will be awarded certificates on the successful completion of the course.

Department of Physics First in-House Symposium

Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura organized “A Research Conclave on Modern Physics: Frontier and Core” on 11-12 January 2023. The symposium was aimed to sow the seed of research amongst young students. All the faculty members showcased their works in front of students, faculty, and other dignitaries.

The honorable Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Biplab Halder inaugurated the event. Among other dignitaries, Dr. A. Ranganath, Registrar, Dr. Priyangshu Rana Borthakur, Dean Faculty of Science and Technology, Dr. Tapan Kumar Mandal, Dean Research and Development, and Dr. Subhasish Chatterjee were present at the daise.

The 2022 Nobel Prize Talk series

The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded to Alain Aspect, Anton Zeilinger, and John Clauser for their contribution to the understanding of Quantum Entanglement. The Department of Physics has organized a three talks series in the area of Quantum Entanglement. Dr. Manik Banik, Associate Professor of S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, delivered the first invited talk of this series.

The Department of Physics organized a tree plantation drive at The ICFAI University Tripura on June 16, 2022, within the University campus and in Mohanpur on July 27, 2022. Some useful plants were arranged for the purpose and planted by the students and Faculties. The aim was to help students get in touch with nature and raise awareness about the importance of trees in maintaining a healthy environment. The department's students and faculty members actively participated in the event.

Yoga Session 2022

The Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, organized a yoga session to increase awareness among the students about the importance of practicing Yoga for maintaining physical health and managing stress, anxiety, and overall good mental health. The session was conducted under the guidance of Prof. Prasenjit Majumder, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education and Yoga, The ICFAI University Tripura. The students and faculty members of the Department of Physics actively participated in the event. The students performed various simple but practical Yoga postures, as demonstrated by Prof. Majumder. During the Yoga session, Prof. Majumder briefly summarized the applicability of Yoga in daily life to maintain a healthy body and mind. Dr. Sovan Ghosh, HOD, Department of Physics ICFAI University Tripura, and Dr. Gobinda Pradhan, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, actively motivated the students to participate the session.

Career Counseling session 2022

The Department of Physics organized a career counseling session at The ICFAI University Tripura on June 14, 2022, for the students of B.Sc Physics and M.Sc Physics. The session was divided into five sub-sessions for the five ongoing batches: B.Sc Physics, year-I, II, III, and M.Sc Physics, year-I, II. Dr. Sovan Ghosh, HOD, Department of Physics, The ICFAI University Tripura, chaired the event. He elaborately discussed various career options available after studying Physics- both in Physics and non-Physics. All the faculties and non-teaching staff of the department actively participated in making the event successful.
